Narrow web design constrains content to a slender central column, leaving generous margins on either side. This intentional restriction of width creates a focused reading experience, drawing from the proportions of print design where measure (line length) is carefully controlled for legibility.

Narrow layouts optimise readability by keeping line lengths within the ideal range of 45-75 characters. They also create a sense of editorial focus and luxury — the abundant empty space on either side signals that the content is considered precious enough to present without distraction.
Narrow layouts translate naturally to mobile screens since the content is already constrained. The main design challenge is ensuring the layout feels intentional on both medium and large screens, often using subtle background treatments or fixed side elements to activate the empty margins.
