The best black websites

Black is one of the two biggest colour collections on A1, and it’s because black does two jobs at once. It reads as premium — fashion, luxury, automotive, studios — and it reads as technical, which is why most software and AI sites use it. The sites here range from portfolios like Soren and Daniel Sun, where black is a gallery wall for the work, to products like Legora and Zamp, where it’s the default dark-mode UI carried onto the marketing site. What separates the good ones is what they do with the black. Most aren’t pure #000. They sit a few steps up, in a dark grey with a hint of warmth or cool, so the page has depth and the type doesn’t glow. The accent colour does the heavy lifting: one colour, used for buttons and links and nothing else. Photography is either dark itself or given a border, so it doesn’t float. And type runs a weight heavier than it would on white, because thin type on black vibrates. Black is also the easiest colour to get wrong through laziness — a black background with white text and no other decisions isn’t a design. Look at dark landing pages, dark software and black and white design sites for narrower cuts, or the dark style collection, which overlaps heavily with this one.

Black website FAQs

What colours go with black on a website?

One accent, chosen for contrast. Lime, electric blue, orange and hot pink are the common picks in this collection because they read at small sizes against dark grey. Off-white for text, not pure white. And one or two greys between the background and the text for borders, cards and secondary copy. More than one accent on a black site usually looks like a mistake.

Is a black website bad for readability?

Not if the contrast and type weight are right. Use off-white text around #e6e6e6, body copy at a medium weight, and a line length of 60 to 75 characters. Long reads are slightly harder on dark backgrounds for most people, so if the page is mostly text — a blog, documentation — consider a light theme or a toggle. For a marketing page, black is fine.

Which industries use black websites?

Fashion and luxury, where black means expensive. Studios and photographers, where it’s a gallery wall. Automotive and audio, where it means engineered. And a huge share of software, developer tools and AI, where it means technical and matches a dark-mode product. Look through the design and AI categories and most of the sites are black.

Should I use pure black (#000000)?

Usually not. Pure black flattens the page because nothing can sit below it, and white text on it halates. Most of the sites here use #0a0a0a to #161616, often with a slight tint toward the accent. Pure black works when you want a hard, high-contrast look — some fashion and editorial sites do it well — but it’s a deliberate choice, not a default.

How do I make a black website feel premium rather than empty?

Detail. Subtle gradients or a soft glow behind the hero so there’s a light source. Borders at 10 to 15% opacity instead of hard lines. Large type with tight letter-spacing. Photography that’s been graded to match the palette. And space — premium black sites leave a lot of the page empty on purpose. The cheap-looking ones fill it.
