Grunge web design embraces raw, distressed textures, rough edges, and an intentionally imperfect aesthetic. Drawing from punk and underground visual culture, these sites use noise, scratches, torn paper effects, and gritty typography to project authenticity and counter-cultural attitude.
Distressed textures, heavy grain, rough or hand-stamped typography, dark moody palettes, torn or weathered edges, ink splatter effects, and deliberately unpolished layouts all characterise the style. The imperfection is intentional and carefully art-directed.
Scanned paper textures, photographed surfaces, grain overlays applied via CSS, and noise generated with SVG filters all contribute. Many designers create physical textures — stamping ink, photocopying, or distressing paper — then scan and layer them digitally.
